Gustavo Sumpta
His path focused on sculpture and performance, Gustavo Sumpta lays out a route followed by ideas of tension and weakness materialised in objects and situations which may develop on very different scales, from the dimension of the body up to urban scale. These different scales also imply different consequences in his work, which can be dedicated to radically subjective processes or can possess a social echo, or sometimes both. For the Coimbra biennial, Gustavo Sumpta has created two projects: a sculptural wall intervention from the multiplication of a sculpture that mimics a star knife, of a type used by outsider groups or gangs. This is, however, a sculpture of cast bronze, a representation that has referential power, even when it is placed in a sculptural composition. On 15 December, the performance Levantar o Mundo will be presented, an action that involves highly contrasting elements of mass, volume and weight, staging situations of paradoxical balance and exhibiting once more the contrasts and tensions that are his own way of viewing the world.
